Boyd Station

Hello and welcome, I have not really discussed this trip much from the summer, when I got the opportunity to go out to Cincianna Kentucky, stay with a great friend and colleague and stay with him until I left.

This journey was something I would have never of expected myself at, despite I find that the small little notes I took while out there on my own, with nothing but my camera, curiosity and imagination.

Before I continue onto the adventures I went on, I first want to thank the few mentors that have pushed me to the next mile marker in my career; Justin Marriman. Jeff Swensen and Jeff’s son Michael Swensen in which I stayed with.

A young boy wearing a blue t-shirt and a baseball cap is outdoors at night, holding a sparkler with sparks flying and creating smoke, while the moon is visible behind trees in the background.

While I was out there, I got to know the family of the Farmers, and yes they are in fact farmers, which is fitting but we were over their house for dinner and I heard something of the word of fireworks, and I really wanted to capture that maternal love and that independence in rural Americana that showcases in these images of both Aldo Farmer and his mother. There is these small moments we have with family members that are so special but we cannot take it for granted and an opportunity presented itself, and I not only took it but there is a warmth to being able to share these intensely special moments.

Two men fishing near a river, one is older with gray hair, glasses, and a gray cap, and the other is younger wearing a black Pittsburgh Pirates cap. They are setting up fishing gear outdoors, with green trees and grass in the background.

This experience was something I was both frightened and excited for, similar to waiting in line for a roller coaster all summer to be unsure if you do or don’t go upside down, turns out it did more than that. The anticipation was killing me to eventually be told to be ready to leave and head out to Kentucky over the summer. There wasn’t a necessity to stay or go anywhere and oddly enough I eventually wandered around and was able to befriend and talk to just about anyone.

I kept thinking that is had to be of them, but still wanted the candid of them living being and just having a good time and still giving enough context to the shot. I was eventually left with this one, as it does a job at self describing without being too much. It was always a challenge in any light, and the people including the kids were a pleasure to photograph along side.

From these small little nuggets of life I got to be apart of, were moments I will never forget for being out there, it isnt just the aspect of doing it but at the same time, I was doing what I wanted, within reason that is. It was easy, not to say not work but it helped me appreciate seeing the world the way I always do. In the photo to the left you will see a window, and the odd part of this photo is this was during the teaching of a photo class Michael teaches, but I wasn’t sure what to do a photo of but made an effort to take something.

The vehicle has worn seats, and the dashboard has several papers and objects, including a roll of paper towels. Outside the vehicle, there are houses and greenery visible through the windshield.
